Forty-eight-year-old Sohrab is foreman at the vast Ispahan steelworks. He lives in the steel town of Fouladshahr and has just had a fourth daughter. His wife’s health prevents her from having any more children. Despite his yearnings for a son, Sohrab’s wife persuades him to see a specialist about getting a vasectomy. The method employed will render him forever sterile. On the eve of the operation his dead father appears in a dream forbidding him from undergoing the surgery. And so Sohrab enters a period of doubt. He asks his wife to change her mind and, in his dreams, tries to change that of his father……all to no avail....
